KL Rahul showed his performance at the much-talked-about No. 4 spot in the batting order in their final ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 warm-up match against Bangladesh at the Cardiff Wales Stadium in Cardiff.
KL Rahul’s classic 108 off 99 gave captain Virat Kohli and coach Ravi Shastri ample reason to smile.
Rahul had made only 6 before chopping on in India’s first warm-up match against New Zealand last week after being sent in at No. 4.
However, Rahul has made good use of another opportunity that came his way on Tuesday. The Karnataka batsman looked in great touch from the word go and played an array of elegant shots against the Bangladesh pacers.
The No. 4 position demands flexibility, that a batsman be able to play the roles of anchor and aggressor, provide the innings balance and make things easier for the lower middle order. Today, Rahul allowed MS Dhoni to get in the groove and both men had fun thereafter.
With six days to go for India’s World Cup opener, it might be premature to make a decision today. Form might be on Rahul’s side, but how players perform in the nets at times plays a vital role in how team managements make up their minds.
With Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan failing to register a good score in the warm-ups, India surely would want to bolster their batting line-up with an extra batsman. A week ago Rahul was an outsider for the No. 4 race. After today he has staked his claim and stands a good chance to become the accidental choice.
