Delhi wicketkeeper batsman Rishabh Pant named as cover for injured opener Shikhar Dhawan at the ongoing ICC World Cup. The BCCI media manager announced that Pant will join the team in Manchester ahead of India’s marquee match against Pakistan on Sunday (June 16).
KL Rahul’s promotion to partner Rohit Sharma at the top will leave No.4 position fall vacant. Vijay Shankar and Dinesh Karthik, who had an equally long if not longer net sessions are the only options to fill the void.
“Pant will be joining the team at the earliest as back-up as requested by the team management. Like Khaleel (Ahmed) he will be travelling with the team but he won’t be part of the squad just yet,” a BCCI official told from Nottingham on Wednesday (June 12).
The team management is still hopeful that Dhawan, who injured his hand in the game against Australia on Sunday (June 9), will recover in a couple of weeks and should be available for the business end of the tournament.
